(Jordan’s Bend) My name is Walt Fricker and I am the new owner of your hometown newspaper, Common Man Gazette, previously doing business as The Times Herald. In the five years since the last edition flew off the press, a lack of transparency and accountability has taken deep root among the society, churches and government of this deceptively peaceful hamlet in the mountains. It has flourished in the absence of the powerful gaze of a free press.
That all changes. Right now.
It’s only fair that as I learn more about you, in return, you should learn about me. Here goes.
My background is in finance. I ran an extremely successful accounting firm in Florida. I met clients from all walks of life, each seeking ways to gain the greatest advantage and security I could provide for them. I studied every law, every statute, every angle to maximize their gains. In the process, I earned the reputation of being detail-oriented. I learned how government works first-hand from the local level to the steps of the United States Congress. I became known as “Fricker the Stickler”.
Now, I bring this same tenacity to the news business. As an outsider, I come without preconceived notions, local political affiliations or favoritism. And I pledge to you, it will stay that way.
Today, you find only this flyer at local businesses and offices around town. Soon, you will have a full newspaper filled with articles and photos reflecting this great area of which we cover.
Soon, our newly painted and labeled racks around town will be filled with our first edition. The first will be free of charge. Our goal is to set the bar for journalistic integrity high so that you will return when we begin to charge at the rack and open up subscription services.
In the meantime, feel free to visit our office on Main Street. Drop by and chat, have a cup of coffee or just wave through the window as you walk by. We want to hear from you.
And that’s a fact. Fricker the Stickler, out.
